At a Loss
An article on miscarriage can be found in the March issue of Women's Health Magazine, "At a Loss: What to Expect When You're No Longer Expecting." It's a decent article, which centers around the author's own experience. However, not all the causes of miscarriage are explored, and there is a "What are the Chances?" section that gives me pause. Apparently a "sense of purpose", a planned pregnancy, decreases your chance of miscarriage by 40%. And eating fruits and vegetables? Cuts your risk in half. Somehow I don't really find these "findings" comforting. But instead wonder if it just continues to perpetuate the notion that a woman is to blame for a miscarriage. I did, however, appreciate the acknowledgment that miscarriage is a fairly taboo subject, as it involves both sex and death. And it is a rarely discussed topic, despite the fact that 15-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. If only some of the myths about miscarriage were dispelled, and there was an acknowledgment that this affects many, many women, perhaps fewer would suffer in silence. Everyday in America, 4,780 women endure a pregnancy loss. And that's a lot of people.

Thanks for posting the article. I sent to my friend who recently miscarried. It's a great read for a first timer.
I'm really ticked off at that "sense of purpose" comment, and I'm not really sure why!
My baby was not planned but once I found out about him/her we welcomed the new addition with open hearts. So are they saying that people like me who had an "oops" moment don't mourn the loss of their baby as much as the ones that had planned their pregnancy.
It's bollocks I tell you - bollocks!
(Sorry... that just really got me going)
Anns
There are some giant holes in the study . . . women who are attempting to get pregnant usually try to cut down on things that might harm a baby, like smoking and drinking. So maybe that is why planned pregnancies miscarry less.
But even then, I don't know.
Yeah, I'm with anns on this one. hmph.
Wow, 4780 is ALOT of women. I feel so sorry for those going through it right this minute. It's not something I'd ever like to go through again.
As for the "sense of purpose" thing, then why did I lose my baby. I really really wanted him or her! Tipsymarie has a good point about giving up things which might harm a baby if you know you might be pregnant.
Thanks for that Alice.
