Panic Spiral

So, I had the gestational diabetes screening test done last week. Yesterday, as I was walking (in a huff, I might add, I was extremely crabby - I barely slept the night before and was overheating) to the Park to hang with the Husband and go for a walk, I noticed that I missed a call while in the subway. The message from the nurse sounded ominous . . . something along the lines of, "We have your blood test results back, it's not an emergency but please call us in the morning." The Husband was dubious, "You don't have gestational diabetes!" As much as I love it when he plays doctor, I did not take his diagnosis as the final say. I was convinced that her tone indicated that I had a positive screen and would need to do the follow-up diagnostic test. Unfortunately, I was correct. I have to go in for the three hour test wherein I fast and then get poked for blood every hour. I've been anxious the whole pregnancy about my weight - I started out so much heavier than normal and have gained about twenty pounds so far. Although that's in the normal range, my goal was to gain twenty-five TOTAL. I can't help but to think that this latest issue is directly related to my weight (and why shouldn't I think that? It's a risk factor). Reading through several websites and my three trillion pregnancy books makes me also realize how serious and dangerous this is for the Kid. I'll be scouring gestational diabetes diet plans for the next week - and upping my exercise, hoping that this will result in negative diagnostic test. And that is all I can say - I'm trying not to go into a panic spiral - but, that's easier said than done.

I've heard that tons of people fail the first one and then go on to pass the three hour with flying colors. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

As much as I bitched about it, the GD wasn't all that bad... I could still eat a wide variety of foods, it was just eating them in the right combo & portion. The worst was having to prick my finger 4 times a day! Ugh. So here's to hoping you don't have GD!! Good luck on the 3 hour test.

I agree with Jen...I know people who have gone for the second and been fine. So it's possible!

And if you don't, you're doing well educating yourself and doing everything in your power to do what's best. Really.

You're getting there. Seriously. Closer and closer.

I'm sorry you have to go in for the second round of testing, and I know from acquaintances that monitoring GD is pretty gross, but of all the late-pregnancy complications, this is one of the easiest to keep completely in check with diet and exercise and insulin. Unlike so many other complications, with enough work, you can control GD and have no negative side effects for you or the fetus. Wishing you the best of luck for your test next week.

It stinks having to go for the longer screen. The same thing happened to me and I still passed the longer test, even though I had failed the screening test. Good luck!

it's not over yet. the first one is just a screen -- the three hour gig is the real test. lots and lots of people (me included) fail the screen and then pass the test with flying colours. good luck!

They made me do the one hour early, at 11 weeks, because they thought I was highrisk for GD (old and fat). I failed, and had to do the 3 hour then, and AGAIN later in the pregnancy. But both times I passed the 3 hour.

Good luck.

Oh that stinks!!! Here's to hoping the 3 hours turns out just fine.

OOF.

I hope it all went well -- so much of pregnancy is out of our control isn't it? That's the frightening part for me, and I'm not even pregnant -- but I empathize with what must be a moment of pause here as you recalibrate things...

I hope you're being gentle with yourself,

Pam
